E-Zines, Print Mags, and Anthologies...Oh My (Thanks Sandra Seamans)

Much to the dismay of my second novel (30K words so far), I have been really engrossed in both reading and writing the short / flash story format. Why? Because I absolutley love it. Minimal time to invest and a quick return on investment.

I've been trying to get up the guts to submit to the crime / horror e-zine, print, anthology market, and nothing helps more than a central place where you can find out where such things exist.

I found exactly what I was looking for over at Sandra Seamans' blog, "My Little Corner". You can check it out HERE

I'm still trying to make a crime story out of Rumplestiltskin for the fairytale challenge contest, and have a 2K word story submitted to the Red Adept site, that if it gets picked, will end up in an anthology sponsored by J.A Konrath. The PG rating forced me to come up with something non-crime related, and I took a  sentimantal, heart string pulling angle with it. We shall see.

  1. Sandra's site is a must, Sean. It's had a link my blog for a long time.

I'm thinking of something to write for the Fairytale contest as well. We'll see if I make it in time. Good luck with yours and the Red Adept submission. Are they still open??

    Keep on writing, mate!

  2. Dave- The Red Adept Submissions are open until early February 21, plenty of time to come up with something. Good luck with the fairy-tale gig, I look forward to reading what you come up with.

  3. I understand where you're coming from. For most of last year, I was also engrossed in reading/writing flash fic.

Far behind you on the novel I started writing this year -- I've got 7000 words in. But I'm loving writing it, and for once, I don't feel compelled to read/write flash fic. I guess there's a time for everything, right? Cycles, all that.

Good luck with the fairytale challenge contest. That sounds truly intriguing.

  4. R.S.- I hear ya. By writing a novel first, I think it made writing shorts a bit easier, and writing the second novel seems a hell of a lot easier than all the pain of the first one. Although, 80K words is way tougher than a 1K word story. 3-5 days compared to 6 months, especially when your writing from 10 PM to 1 AM.

Best of luck with the WIP, I can't wait until it is available to read.

  5. Sean, I really hear you on the Flash fiction obsession. That Christmas Noir challenge has been a fantastic thing to both take part in and especially read.

I did think of an idea for the fairytale challenge, so here's hoping I find enough time in the next few days to nail it down.

I wanted to tell you and anyone else who happens to be reading here about the Forward Motion for Writers website . In particular, I thought that you might like to know about their new Indie publishing forum

  6. Seana- I really hope you come up with a story, as you did a great job on your DSD entry.

Thanks for the heads up on the FMfW site. I just joined up. I'll be checking out all the offerings over the next few days and will be sure to report back after I get a good feel for it.
