Them's Some Bad-Ass Banditos

Westerns really aren't my thing. I don't read them much, but I do enjoy a good one when I watch one. "3:10 to Yuma" was the last one I really liked and I do want to see the remake of  "True Grit".

I just read an excellent 600 word Western themed story by Court Merrigan over at Thrillers, Killers n Chillers. It's titled " Thirty Miles North of Cheyenne". It's more of a scene, but from the get-go, this one had my undivided attention, for the quality writing, suspense, and the imagery. I give the author mucho credit for taking a typical Western scenario that has been done a million times and would have most rolling their eyeballs, and pulling it off so well, especially in only 600 words.

  1. Going to go read it now. I'm not real big on Westerns either, though my dad is 100% cowboy and watches them often. One of my favorite Westerns, actually it is one of my favorite movies, is The Missing, directed by Ron Howard and starring Tommy Lee Jones and Cate Blanchet. It's fabulous.

  2. I've been thinking about Westerns since I read and very much enjoyed "3:10 to Yuma" in a crime anthology. The closest thing to a Western I've read since is Leonard's The Hot Kid.

  4. I suspect that none of us has been reading the right westerns in the recent past, as there is nothing inherent in the genre that readers of crime fiction should despise.

I'll check out the story and also The Missing. Tommy Lee Jones is my kind of actor. And Cate Blanchett is no slouch either.

Nice to see a new post from you, Sean.

  5. Seana- I hear you. Crime / Westerns do have a cross over appeal.
