The biggest news around today is the capture of the elusive James "Whitey" Bulger. He's the former big-time crime boss from Boston, MA, who has been on the lamb for about 16 years. This guy was the real deal, but I think the biggest issue with him is that he despised "rats" and dealt with them severely, yet he was the biggest rat of all. Can't wait to see how this all works out. If your looking to find out more about Whitey and his notorious Winter Hill Gang, I can recommend Black Mass and BOYOS, as two good novels that are well worth a read.
Its funny, when you come from Boston the name Whitey is just part of the everyday culture. I made some offhanded remark about his age on Facebook and how it would be funny if he even made it through the trial and a friend from Jersey, now in SoCal, made a comment that after reading his wiki she couldn't understand why Hollywood hadn't come knocking yet (then followed up re: The Departed). It boggled my mind that someone who'd lived so close had never heard of such a well known figure that I grew up hearing about almost daily.
ReplyDeleteAnd as a side note? I think once he starts talking about the many, many, MANY cops/FBI agents allegedly involved in his operations he's going to end up w/ 6 months probation for a parking ticket or something.
Jenn- Thanks for stopping in, and welcome. Should get interesting once the trial starts.
ReplyDeleteHi Sean,
ReplyDeleteHe sounds like a right one. Unfortunately, we've got a few in Manchester too. Thanks for the alert. I'll follow the story with interest, bud.
Regards,
Col
Col- Yeah, Whitey was / is a legend up my way. I still can't believe they caught him.
